Dan Novakov to Serve as Catholic Bowl III Honorary Chairman

July 21, 2023

Dan Novakov to serve as Catholic Bowl III Honorary ChairmanWhen Dan Novakov was playing high school football at Cincinnati Moeller under Gerry Faust he never dreamed he would one day be Chairman of the legendary Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. Nor did he know he would be the starting center for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish when they defeated the Texas Longhorns in that same event in 1971, ending the 31-game winning streak of the Austin team. Even more far-fetched was that he would be honored by the Dallas Catholic Foundation in 2022 along with his Dallas-native wife, Lydia, having met while attending the University of Notre Dame and St. Mary’s College. All of this has come true for this dedicated attorney, whose son Daniel is the most successful coach in the TAPPS league these days.

Catholic Bowl producer Patrick Steenberge, former teammate of Novakov at Notre Dame comments, “What an honor to have Dan lend his name and presence to this noteworthy showcase, now in its third year. It will be especially fun for me to share the day of high school action with him, allowing us to enjoy time together talking about memories, family, and our Catholic lifestyles.”

On Saturday, September 9 Dan will add another positive accolade to his civic-oriented life when he serves as Honorary Chair of the Catholic Bowl III, a doubleheader played at the Ford Center in Frisco, Texas. The event celebrates Faith, Freedom, and Football and is always played on the closest Saturday to 9-11, the tragedy where nearly 2,000 Americans died.

The 3 pm game will feature Nolan Catholic High School hosting St. Edmund High School of Eunice, Louisiana. The nightcap at 7 pm matchup will be fascinating as John Paul II of Plano welcomes Sacred Heart School of Muenster. The Dioceses of Dallas and Fort Worth are the major sponsors of the Catholic Bowl again, pleased to promote Catholic Education and Athletics, powerful tenets of the Church mission.
