MEET THE PEOPLE OF JPII
Kyle Mitchell ’07 has been named Director of Esophageal Cancers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, marking the latest step in a medical career centered on thoracic surgical oncology and cancer research.
The appointment was shared with John Paul II High School by Mitchell’s mother, Susan Mitchell. MD Anderson’s public faculty profile currently lists Mitchell as an assistant professor in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, where his clinical work focuses on complex thoracic cancers, including cancers of the lung, esophagus and mediastinum.
For Mitchell, esophageal cancer has become more than one area of specialization. It is a problem he has chosen to pursue through both patient care and research.

In a recent MD Anderson video introducing his work, Mitchell said, “My heart lies in my research of esophageal cancer because it remains an unsolved problem.” He said his goal is to “build better, more personalized treatments in the future.”
That combination of surgery, research, and long-term problem-solving has defined much of Mitchell’s professional path since graduating from JPII in 2007.
From JPII to Notre Dame and Medicine
After John Paul II High School, Mitchell attended the University of Notre Dame, earning a bachelor’s degree in economics in 2011. He then returned to Texas for medical school at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School in Houston, where he earned his medical degree in 2015.
His postgraduate training followed an unusually integrated route. According to MD Anderson, Mitchell became the inaugural trainee in an accelerated 4+3 general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery program operated jointly by MD Anderson and McGovern Medical School. During that training, he completed a two-year research sabbatical and earned a master’s degree in clinical research methodology in 2020. He completed the joint cardiothoracic and general surgery residency in 2024.
Mitchell’s clinical interests now include minimally invasive and organ-sparing techniques for patients with early-stage, locally advanced and oligometastatic cancers involving the lung, esophagus and mediastinum. He is also trained in surgery for diseases of the chest wall, pleura and airway.
His work extends well beyond the operating room. MD Anderson says Mitchell’s research examines the tumor microenvironment, biomarkers with potential clinical applications, and new therapeutic strategies. He has also contributed to research on multimodal treatment for non-small cell lung cancer.
Mitchell has published more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has presented his work nationally and internationally. He is certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
His record also shows a progression of recognition across training, patient care, and scholarship. MD Anderson lists Mitchell as the 2016 Intern of the Year in McGovern Medical School’s Department of Surgery. In 2023, he received the Director’s Award for Excellence in Patient Care from McGovern’s Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery. The following year, he received the Jeffrey Lee Cousins Endowed Fellowship in Lung Cancer Research at MD Anderson, and in 2025 he was named Reviewer of the Year by the Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
Those honors span nearly a decade and reflect the distinct demands of an academic surgical career: technical skills, patient care, sustained research, and contributions to the wider medical profession.
A Focus on Esophageal Cancer
Mitchell’s growing leadership in esophageal cancer is evident throughout his academic work.
His MD Anderson faculty record includes presentations on organ preservation in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, clinical trials in esophageal cancer, and surgical approaches for esophageal malignancies. In 2024, he participated in the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus World Congress in Edinburgh, Scotland, including an invited presentation titled “Esophagus: The Most Unforgiving Organ.”
His publication record also includes work focused specifically on esophageal disease. In 2026, he was among the authors of a paper on the multidisciplinary management of esophageal cancer, while earlier academic work addressed surgical treatment, staging and outcomes for patients with esophageal malignancies.
The new director role places that body of work into a broader leadership context. It also reflects a career that has developed around a difficult clinical question: how surgeons and cancer specialists can improve outcomes while tailoring treatment more precisely to the individual patient.
That challenge brings together two sides of Mitchell’s professional work. Surgery can offer an immediate intervention for a patient facing cancer. Research operates on a longer timeline, asking what can be learned from current outcomes and how treatment can improve for future patients.
Mitchell has publicly described both as important to him. He was drawn to surgery because of the immediate impact it can have on patients, while his research allows him to pursue problems whose answers may take years to develop.
Three Mitchell Siblings, Three JPII Alumni
Kyle’s story is also part of a larger JPII family connection.
All three Mitchell siblings graduated from John Paul II High School: Kyle in 2007, Jeff in 2009, and Kristen in 2010.
Jeff Mitchell ’09 is married and lives in Connecticut with his wife and two daughters, with another child on the way. He works as a senior analyst at LMR Partners.
Kristen Mitchell ’10 is also married and has a 2-year-old daughter. She works at Memorial Hermann in the Pediatric Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, caring for infants following heart surgery.
Kyle is married and has three children.
The siblings have followed different professional paths, but each has built a career carrying significant professional responsibility. Kyle’s work combines cancer surgery, research, and medical leadership. Kristen provides specialized care for pediatric patients recovering from heart surgery. Jeff has built his career in financial analysis.
For JPII, the story is not about claiming credit for what three graduates accomplished years after leaving campus. It is about staying connected to alumni and recognizing where their education, choices, and professional commitments have taken them.
John Paul II High School’s mission calls for developing leaders who are critical thinkers and effective communicators, committed to service and rooted in faith. Its motto, “Seek to Serve,” concisely expresses that mission.
The Mitchell family offers one example of how those principles can take different forms over time.
A Career Still Developing
Mitchell’s appointment comes while his academic and clinical work continues to expand.
His recent faculty record includes service on MD Anderson working groups, editorial boards, and professional organizations. In 2025 and 2026, he was an invited attendee at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Leadership Institute. His MD Anderson profile also lists him on the editorial boards of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery and Annals of Thoracic Surgery Short Reports beginning in 2026.
Those responsibilities sit alongside his central work: treating patients, operating on complex thoracic cancers and pursuing research that may change how those cancers are treated.
For a JPII graduate whose professional focus is now one of medicine’s persistent problems, the latest appointment represents another stage rather than a finish line.
Mitchell’s own description of esophageal cancer as an “unsolved problem” makes that clear. The work continues in the operating room, through research and now through expanded leadership at MD Anderson.
