On Wednesday, May 27, 2026, a wonderful gathering of family, close friends, long-time co-workers, and former students came together to celebrate a monumental milestone: the retirement of legendary educator, Mr. John Leon Alexander Schram. Marking the conclusion of an astonishing 50-year teaching career, the celebration took place at Stonebriar Country Club from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The venue provided the perfect backdrop for an energetic, joyful celebration, filled with drinks, bits, bytes, and endless laughter, for a man who didn't just teach complex variables—he shaped human beings. Leadership Tributes
JPII Principal Dr. Daniel Ledbetter shared lighthearted stories of working alongside Mr. Schram. From getting unexpected advice on how to secure a half-price cruise cabin (always book the room right next to the elevator!) to witnessing the absolute reverence students held for him, Dr. Ledbetter highlighted the deep respect that defined Mr. Schram’s tenure. “You have probably impacted millions of people in your life without even knowing it,” Dr. Ledbetter shared. To honor his faithful service to John Paul II High School from 2005 to 2026, the school proudly presented Mr. Schram with a beautiful, custom bronze statue of St. John Paul II.
Laughter, Grace, and 59 Years of Marriage
True to form, Mr. Schram took the microphone and instantly had the room erupting in laughter with a classic story from his home life. He detailed a massive, 30-acre yard fire he accidentally started while trying to clear out "junk," which ultimately required a fleet of water trucks to extinguish. The emotional highlight, however, was how his "sweet wife" completely reframed the disaster, telling him it was a brilliant way to burn out the bad grass to let the new seed thrive. "In 59 years of marriage, my sweet wife has never cut me down," Mr. Schram said to a chorus of "awws" and applause from his loved ones and colleagues.
Voices from the Past: Alumni Impact
The celebration also featured a moving tribute video highlighting messages from decades of grateful alumni. The stories perfectly illustrated how Mr. Schram’s lessons reached far beyond the computer lab. One former student recalled a lesson in grace when Mr. Schram gave marriage advice about what to do when a husband forgets the bread on a grocery run: "It’s not because he doesn't love you, it’s because men need grace!" Others highlighted his immense professional and personal influence. Dina Minkow (Class of 2008), now a Senior Software Engineer, noted that she never imagined choosing a programming career in high school, attributing her entire career path to the spark Mr. Schram lit. Meanwhile, classmates like Kimberly Roeten (Class of 2014) fondly remembered how he introduced them to the rhythm and joy of swing and ballroom dancing.
Executing the Final Command
Whether teaching complex string arrays, the quickstep, or life-long financial responsibility, Mr. Schram always guided his students by his famous military-inspired philosophy: “Learning is about going from Bewilderment to Obvious.” As he officially executes his final exit() command, trades in his keyboard for the dance floor, and swaps the classroom for the Lido deck, the entire Cardinal family extends a massive "Thank You" to Mr. Schram. Your legacy is officially, beautifully obvious.
