Ms. Melissa Downs, M.Ed
Ms. Melissa Downs is the Dean of Innovation and Academic Programs at John Paul II High School where she has been a member of the faculty since 2012.
Ms. Downs is involved in curriculum and instruction and supervises the Computer Science, Mathematics, and Science Departments. She is the sponsor of Cardinal Mentors, a group of peer mentors to new JPII students. Ms. Downs also oversees the Social Innovation Lab, STEAM Center, Advanced Placement, and Dual Credit programs. She continues to have oversight with Student Activities. She is passionate about cultivating student leaders and working alongside teachers to inspire greatness in JPII classrooms.
Ms. Downs grew up in Garland and graduated from Texas A & M Commerce with a degree in Mathematics and Finance. She received her Master’s degree from Southern Methodist University in Educational Policy and Leadership and was selected as the Most Outstanding Student in the program.
In her 15 years as an educator, she has taught a variety of math classes and sponsored many organizations, including Student Council, Academic Decathlon, Model United Nations, and many others.
She has received several awards during her career such as “Teacher of the Year” at Rowlett High School and an award for her meaningful work with students with special needs.
