The JPII Cardinal Band

is a fun, vibrant organization that performs throughout the year with a goal of producing well-rounded students who are excellent musicians, students, and leaders.

Since its inception in 2005, the Cardinal Band has received consistent Division I “Sweepstakes” ratings in TPSMEA State Marching and Concert competition. The band performs two concerts each year in addition to a marching contest in the fall and a concert contest in the spring. The band program features a marching band, symphonic wind ensemble, jazz band, drumline, and pep band. The marching band performs at all of the home football games in the fall and the pep band performs at basketball games in the winter. The Cardinal Band is a regular class and meets 5th period on B Days. Cardinal Band students are members of the Football, Baseball, Basketball, Track, Swimming, Tennis, Softball, and Soccer teams. They are also involved in most of the clubs on campus such as Academic Decathlon, Robotics, NHS, and Speech & Debate.

Cardinal Marching Band & Drumline Information

List of 3 items.

  • Band Camp

Band camp begins at 3 p.m. and finishes at 10 p.m. each day. The band rehearses in the band room all afternoon and marches on the field in the evenings beginning at 6:15 p.m. to avoid the afternoon heat. Band camp will be held July 26-30, 2021.

Students at camp need to bring dinner each day with them. They will need a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Students should wear cool, comfortable clothes and athletic shoes with socks. No flip-flops, sandals, slip-on shoes, etc.
  • Rehearsals

Once school has started, the band will rehearse on B days from 8:00 a.m. until the end of 5th period at 10:10 a.m. We are usually on the field until 9:40 a.m. and then students come in to shower and change into their uniforms. During the week of marching contest, we will add A day rehearsals in the evening in our final push toward contest.

All students in the JPIIHS Cardinal Band must participate in the marching band. Students who play non-marching instruments such as oboe or bassoon have several options. Please contact Mr. Browning for more information. Saxophones will play alto or tenor, no baritone saxophone in marching band.
  • Cost

The cost for each band member is between $250 and $300.

We will size for uniforms, get shirt sizes, order marching shoes, and issue marching instruments when needed during camp.

List of 6 frequently asked questions.

  • Q. Why do I want to be in the JPIIHS Cardinal Band?

Band at JPIIHS is fun! Students not only learn marching and musical skills, they learn leadership and teamwork. Band will help you develop your organizational skills as well. Plus, the first day of school, you will have 50 friends!!!
  • Q. I want to be in band, but it takes so much time!

Like any activity, being good at band takes work. That said the Cardinal Band only rehearses on B days before school during marching season and during class the rest of the year.
  • Q. What about playing sports or clubs?

Most students in the JPIIHS band are involved with several activities other than band. We have students who play football, basketball, are cheerleaders, and part of AcDec. We believe that students should be well rounded and that no activity should take over their lives.
  • Q. Do I have to audition for the Cardinal Band?

No! If you are new to JPIIHS, just schedule a meeting with the band director. Students of all ability levels enjoy great success in the band!
  • Q. Help! I have never marched before!

No problem! Students are taught to march at band camp, no experience necessary!
  • Q. I am new to JPIIHS, how do I become part of the band?

When you receive your acceptance letter email the director:
Tell him your instrument and schedule a meeting to get your uniform size.  This is very important to make sure there are enough spots in the marching show for everyone! Please contact Mr. Browning prior to June 1 to guarantee your spot in the marching band.
