The students at John Paul II High School have specific goals each year. Below is an outline of the goals expected.
Freshman Year
- Get acclimated to the high school experience
- Take challenging courses
- Get involved in extracurricular activities
- Get involved in Christian service
- Build organizational skills
- Develop study skills
Sophomore Year
- Continue with challenging courses
- Prepare for the PSAT exam and take PSAT in October and review results in January
- Continue involvement in extracurricular activities
- Continue involvement with Christian service
- Develop leadership skills
- Take AP exam(s), if applicable, in May
- Investigate summer programs which focus on student’s interestsConsider visiting one or two colleges
- Begin online exploration of college sites
Junior Year
- Take the most rigorous classes available, and maintain outstanding academic performance
- Prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT and take in October and review results in January
- Attend College Night in the Fall
- Take an interest/personality profile
- Develop a career interest profile
- Plan the next two years of extracurricular and Christian service activities
- Get military academy and ROTC information
- Continue to invest in leadership skills and opportunities
- Parents and student meet individually with the College Counselor in January/February
- Student meets individually with College Counselor in March/April , having developed a list of ten colleges within three levels of selectivity
- Identify two teachers to request letters of recommendation
- Develop Student Resume
- Draft college essay
- Student athletes prepare athletic resume and register with the NCAA Clearinghouse
- Take AP exams and SAT Subject Tests as appropriate
- Schedule and take SAT and/or ACT exams
- Research interesting and challenging summer courses, internships, jobs, travel or activities
Senior Year
- Continue rigorous coursework and outstanding academic performance
- If needed, take additional SAT/ACT
- Research and finalize list of colleges
- Create an online or paper file for each college
- Complete college visits, if possible
- Prepare applications, write final essays, request letters of recommendation and request transcripts and test scores to be sentdirectly to colleges. Target date of October 1 for submission to colleges.
- Research financial aid and scholarships and complete all required financial reporting
- Respond to all college selection decisions
- Take AP exams in May
- Utilize the summer for college preparation
