Rich Gaffney - Athletic Director


Head Coach David Gaffney - Football - jpiifootball.org
A charter member of the JPII coaching staff, David brings a wealth of experience both as player and coach to this founding program.  An All-Southland Conference linebacker at Texas State University, Coach Gaffney followed his passion for the game to the sidelines in 1997, assisting in the formation of the Rowlett High School program, joining a run of district titles in Allen, and returning to his alma mater, Rockwall, before accepting the call to build the JPII program.  David draws from his own experience as an associate pastor and youth group leader in making faith development a key component of ‘Find A Way’ football.  Coach Gaffney takes the field every week with the support of his wife, Erika and three children, Brooke, Braden, and Blaine.

 


Head Coach Sherry Olivares - Volleyball - www.jpiivolleyball.com
Sherry Olivares starts her 3rd year at JPII High School as head volleyball coach. Her teams have finished with winning records each of her first two seasons with JPII.   Prior to JPII she coached 12 seasons at Garland High School.  Her successful program included her teams advancing to playoffs 10 out of the 12 seasons.  Prior to her career at Garland High, Coach Olivares coached successful programs at Austin Academy & Webb Middle Schools, and Newman Smith and South Garland High Schools.

A player herself, she attended East Texas State University (now Texas A&M, Commerce) on a full volleyball scholarship.  Her playing day accomplishments include many all-conference teams, her team's Most Valuable Player Award, as well as being named "Most Outstanding Female Athlete" her senior year.  She co-directs a highly successful youth league, Garland Volleyball Association, and is a Cap Level 1 certified club volleyball coach.
 
When not coaching, Sherry enjoys time with her kids – Marissa, a sophomore at Sachse High School, plays volleyball, and Michael, a seventh grader at Hudson Middle School, plays basketball.

Coach Evans comes to us from Irving MacArthur High School, where he was the varsity boys basketball coach.  Coach Evans brings with him 12 years of basketball coaching experience.  He was influential in opening up Vista Ridge High School’s 4-A basketball program (Leander ISD ) and was very successful while coaching there.  Coach Evans will continue the excellence already begun in our boys basketball programs.

Coach Hensle comes  to John Paul II H.S. from McKinney High School, where she was the assistant varsity basketball coach.  She also spent several years coaching at Lutheran High School before going to McKinney.  She has been involved in Select girls basketball  programs for several years.  Coach Hensle will bring all that experience to JPII.  She is eager to continue building excellence in our girls basketball ball program.  Mrs. Hensle will also teach in our Social Studies department as she is certified in Social Studies composite grades 8-12.

Coach Harvey (a proud Texas A&M graduate) is in his second year of teaching at John Paul II High School and his tenth overall.  After coaching boys soccer at North Garland High School and West Mesquite High School, and coaching Girls at West Mesquite High School, Coach Harvey is the current varsity coach for both Boys and Girls at JPII.  Coach Harvey has a beautiful wife, two amazing children and a firm commitment to reinforcing a team-based mentality with his students.  As a member of the math department, Coach Harvey currently teaches a full load of Algebra I classes in addition to his coaching duties.

Joey graduated from Hendrix College in May of 2000 with a BA in English.  An NCAA Academic All-American, Joey played intercollegiate tennis, basketball, and soccer at Hendrix. In 2005, Joey joined the JPII staff, leaving a three-year tenure as Head Tennis Coach at Bishop Dunne High School.  A two-time TAPPS Coach of the Year, Coach Schewee led the Lady Cardinals to a State Runner-Up finish in 2007 and the Cardinals to JPII’s first District Championship in 2008.  Joey lives in Carrollton with her husband, Billy, and their sons, Will and Sam.

Brian Gaffney begins his fouth year at John Paul II High.  A ten year veteran coaching at the high school level, Brian lead the Cardinals to a play-off birth in their first varsity season, and Coach Gaffney was recognized as TAPPS 1-6A Coach of the Year.  Brian is a graduate of Sam Houston State where he was an All-Conference infielder for the Bearkats and was part of the 1996 Southland Conference Championship team.  Brian and his wife Hope reside in Rockwall with their daughter, Grace.

Bryan S. Parfrey Med, LAT, ATC - Athletic Trainer
Bryan has been an Athletic Trainer for over 25 years and has worked in high school, college, professional and clinical settings. His Athletic Training career started at the University of Arizona where he received his Bachelors and Masters. Bryan came to Tucson after growing up in New York City where he excelled in football track and baseball. After a successful clinical career in Tucson, Bryan moved to the Dallas area to be a part owner in a Physical Therapy clinic. He stayed involved in the high school setting through his clinic.
 
After leaving the clinic setting he moved to the high school setting and was part of a state championship at Plano West for Girls Soccer and Tennis. He stayed in the high school setting through contract associations with Presbyterian and Baylor Hospitals.
 
He has worked for the California Angels Professional Baseball club, USTA Professional Tennis Tour, Texas Collegiate champion Denton Outlaws and has coordinated medical coverage for many large tournaments. Bryan is a member of the NATA and has a state license in Texas as an Athletic Trainer.

His family includes Susan his wife, children Amy, Stuart and Alyssa. Bryan enjoys 70’s muscle cars (his 74 Camaro) and is a Home Theater enthusiast. This is his second year at John Paul II.
