Academic Decathlon 2008 State Results

John Paul II High School’s Academic Decathlon team will represent Texas in the national small school Academic Decathlon competition.

Although the JPII team finished third at the state small school meet March 2 in San Antonio, the first and second place winners, Taylor High School and Frisco’s Liberty High School, have school enrollments above the 650 maximum allowed by the United States Academic Decathlon for the national small school competition. JPII, with about 600 students, meets the requirements and will participate in a virtual, eight-event competition at the end of April as part of the United States Academic Decathlon national event.

At the state meet, the JPII team won a total of $12,000 in scholarship awards. Its state third place team finish provides a $500 scholarship for each team member and its sweep of the varsity overall places gives Hunt Brothers a $3,500 scholarship for his first place finish; Ryan Miller, second, a $2,500 scholarship, and Conan Butterly, third, a $1,500 scholarship.

The team also garnered team medals for second place overall Super Quiz and second place Super Quiz relay and received 28 individual medals, including four perfect scores: Erin Hansen, honors interview; Hunt Brothers, varsity interview; Ryan Lemens, honors essay, and Matt Kaminsky, scholastic speech.

Other gold medals went to Hunt Brothers for varsity economics, varsity language and literature, varsity art, and varsity super quiz individual; Conan Butterly for varsity science, varsity music, and varsity art; Ryan Miller, varsity math and varsity essay; and Matt Kaminsky, scholastic art.

Larry Li placed second in scholastic essay; Conan Butterly, second in varsity language and literature, and Ryan Miller, second in varsity music.

Third place medals went to Caroline Dillard, honors interview; Ryan Lemens, second in honors economics; Dina Minkow, scholastic math and scholastic language and literature, Ryan Miller, varsity economics, and Conan Butterly, varsity super quiz individual.

Alternate team members are Aaron Chu, Alec Abernathy, and Courtney Davis.  Coaches are Amy Eckler, Suellyn Chesal, and Pam Chaney.

John Paul II, a Diocese of Dallas Catholic college preparatory high school founded in 2005, is the only Catholic school and the only private school to qualify for this year’s Texas Academic Decathlon state meet. It is the third consecutive year the school has done so.
